Many years ago, a group of us decided to acquire model WW2 fleets, for use in the quaint hobby of table-top wargaming. The mighty British and mighty Americans had been selected by some of the players and we all wanted to take different fleets (who would want to duplicate someone else’s collection?), so I considered the Italians or Japanese. It was, for some of us, the first time we’d really researched these historic fleets and, I have to say, as an eighteen-year-old enthusiast, I was rather surprised by some of the strengths and weaknesses in the cruiser and destroyer components of the various fleets. Now, I ended up taking the Italians (because I could see some very fun ways to use their fleet, both tactically and strategically) but I had been very impressed by much of what I had seen of the Japanese medium and light forces. Here are the things which impressed me about their cruiser force:

Has the Russian invasion of Ukraine turned into a deadly war of attrition, the wearing down of resistance, as constant combat between Russian and Ukrainian forces? In respect, every war is a war of attrition, as in most cases it comes down to how many resources each belligerent can put in the conflict zone. Even the classic war of movement, such as the German’s Blitzkrieg, came down to logistics and attrition, as in how long could German forces maintain enough offensive power to continue their assault without their opponents reducing their combat power far enough to blunt / stop the advance. That’s why it’s said that amateurs study tactics, professionals study logistics. So far this war has been rather reminiscent of the Second World War, in terms of the Russians steadily pushing forward along roads (I share the skepticism of many who believe Russia only controls those roads and not the territory in between) and the Ukrainians slowly falling back, using delaying tactics and even special operations behind the lines to interfere with supply convoys. So, yes this war can be accurately called a war of attrition, especially if Russia’s attack stalls and the front remains constant for a period of time. This will especially prove true if Russia begins street fighting reminiscent of Stalingrad.

Over the last two years, federal prosecutors in Delaware have issued scores of subpoenas for documents related to Hunter Biden’s foreign work and for bank accounts linked to him and his associates, including two formerly close business partners, Eric Schwerin and Devon Archer, according to people familiar with the investigation. Last year, prosecutors interviewed Mr. Archer and subpoenaed him for documents and grand jury testimony, the people said. Mr. Archer, who was sentenced last month in an unrelated securities fraud case in which a decision to set aside his conviction was reversed, had served with Mr. Biden on Burisma’s board, starting in 2014. People familiar with the investigation said prosecutors had examined emails between Mr. Biden, Mr. Archer and others about Burisma and other foreign business activity. Those emails were obtained by The New York Times from a cache of files that appears to have come from a laptop abandoned by Mr. Biden in a Delaware repair shop. The email and others in the cache were authenticated by people familiar with them and with the investigation..
