We can negate the importance of both Xi and Putin, but then we would just be creating a world view which is not backed by reality or facts. We can also see clearly that Putin and Xi have failed in the task of bringing their nations forward in a renewable way, as their entire basis for power centralization has been the elimination of opponents and restricting freedoms. Such actions in the long run fail to build a solid basis for stability once their own leadership ends. Both leaders are students of history to varying measure, and they know both sides of the equation they have employed both to gain power and to keep it. The idea of their own legacy has come up as both leaders are advancing in age. For Putin the idea that he has done far less than what Stalin had achieved by the time he had ruled 23 years is obvious. Stalin had created an Empire larger than even what the Czars had ever dreamt possible. He had taken a nation which had been for the most part in a preindustrial age and turned it into the world’s second atomic power. Stalin could state quite clearly that the U.S.S.R. was a Superpower in 1949. Putin on the other hand can only point to the fact that Russia survived the past 23 years, and now is sanctioned with its economy in dire straights from his gamble with Ukraine.
