Who said ‘Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God’?

Thomas Jefferson is widely credited with this phrase, though historians debate its exact origin. It appeared in his correspondence and was suggested for the Seal of the United States but not officially adopted. Regardless of the precise source, the quote has become synonymous with American revolutionary thought. It reflects the foundational belief that citizens have a right to challenge government overreach.

Is this a Bible verse?

No, this phrase is not a direct Bible verse. It reflects Enlightenment ideals about natural rights and resistance to tyranny, drawing on theological concepts where divine law supersedes human law. Many libertarians and religious individuals adopt this motto because it bridges faith and civic responsibility. The sentiment aligns with scriptural teachings on justice but originates from political philosophy rather than scripture.

What does the phrase mean?

The meaning centers on the idea that resisting oppressive government is a moral duty aligned with higher principles. It champions individual freedom and civil disobedience against unjust rulers. By wearing this libertarian clothing, you express support for limiting state power and protecting personal liberties. The slogan serves as a reminder that obedience to conscience often requires defiance of corrupt authority.

Is this hoodie suitable for Independence Day gifts?

Yes, this hoodie makes a strong gift for Independence Day or Constitution Day celebrations. It appeals to history buffs, libertarians, and those who value American revolutionary ideals.
