What does ‘we wear their numbers god knows our names’ mean?

The phrase connects jersey numbers to spiritual identity by suggesting that while fans wear player numbers on their shirts, God recognizes each individual by name. It serves as a faith reference that reminds believers they are known personally by God, not just identified by their team allegiance or social labels. This meaning appeals to those who see their sports fandom as compatible with their deeper religious beliefs.
